In Her Shoes | Jacqui Turk

Meet Jacqui Turk, photographer and interiors style-guru, and the genius behind our latest shoot.

Not a week goes by that we're not drawn into one of Jacqui's latest projects - with a long list of clients spanning contemporary fashion, homewares and more, Jacqui's aesthetic is highly sought after - including by us!

We caught up with Jacqui to discuss what makes a house a home and where she finds inspiration...

Describe yourself in 5 words:

Creative

Part-time-vegetarian

Pinot-gris-drinker

Struggling-minimalist

You’ve photographed some of Australia’s most beautiful interiors (not to mention, your own!). Tell us, how did you get started in photography?

I studied an Associate Diploma in Photography upon completing school. After living overseas, a decade in magazines on both Picture and Fashion desks, then having kids I felt a strong pull back to photography.

I bought a digital camera enrolled in some courses and went from there. It wasn’t easy and I did a lot of free work for experience. A job at Broadsheet was the turning point for me.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere. Walking in my neighbourhood, interior books and magazines, shoot locations and people I meet. Of course Instagram and Pinterest play a big part as well!

What are you most passionate about?

I am passionate about my work. I love all the crazy talented people I get to work with. It's where I have met some of the best people I know and who have become some of my closest friends. My family would say that I am most passionate about our Boston Terrier, Leo, though!

What makes a house a home?

A feeling. A house becomes a home with people who inhabit the space and what they fill it with. Personal pieces that evoke memories, family photos, art works, pieces from travel.

Describe your personal style:

Mostly understated and definitely casual.

Simple, relaxed and modern.  I like to stick to block colours over prints and you will always find me in sneakers!

Who do you look up to?

I respect and admire so many of the strong and talented woman I’ve met over the years through this industry doing amazing things in their chosen fields. Many run small businesses and are working through challenging times, pivoting and adjusting to changing circumstances. Woman juggling work and family, yet still managing to stay positive, focused and getting things done! I am lucky that I get to work for woman like this who constantly inspire, these are the gals I most look up to.

Describe your perfect day:

My perfect day would be waking up in my favourite coastal town, Byron Bay in Summer.

Walking to the dog beach with our pooch, Leo, for an early swim and then back via my favourite cafe, Leaf and Grain, for some brekky greens. Later back to the beach for another swim and lay in the sun, a bit of shopping in the industrial area. Evening cocktails in the balmy weather with friends and then dinner at any one of Byron’s fabulous restaurants!

What is your favourite piece from the Sambag collections?

I love the Gigi Sneaker. It is the perfect go to shoe for me, both stylish and comfy.

Great for work as well as to dress up for a drink with friends.

And our signature question, if you were a shoe, what style would you be?

I’d definitely be a sneaker, a retro type. Stylish yet relaxed, classic but cool. Easy going and can definitely travel the distance…
