Meet one of the latest style gurus on our radar, Marie Hillard, or perhaps better known as, @thebrisbanegirl.
As her pseudonym might suggest, Marie is based in Brisbane, hustling at her 9-5 Government role. But out of hours, fashion is her passion, and one that has led to exciting collaborations both in her home-town and internationally. Sambag caught up with the self-professed workaholic to talk personal style, insta-hubbies and how she's adapting to a life-indoors...
Describe yourself using 5 words:
Energetic, creative, social, dedicated, kind
What are you most passionate about?
I’m passionate about photography, I have two Instagram profiles, @MarieLoves and @TheBrisbaneGirl which both revolve around photography, editing and travelling to interesting shoot locations. I have met some amazingly creative people, particularly in the last 4 years, and photography has been a common thread. My other passions are my insta-hubby (the man behind the lens!) and of course my fur babies, George and Billy.
Who do you look to as a style icon?
Nicole Warne. She is a classic beauty and I love everything she wears - I would love to swap wardrobes with her! She can pull off any outfit effortlessly, from a red carpet event to a street style look. She's been such an influence in where I am now as a fashion blogger.
How would you define your personal style?
My personal style is tailored - I would wear a blazer anytime of the week! I also love shoes! I attend many fashion events throughout the year and all those outfits require the perfect pair of shoes to complete the look.
How has your style changed since being in self-isolation?
My style of dressing has changed to casual Friday every weekday! This includes mainly denims, and a nice button up shirt to ensure I look presentable when I dial-in for video conferences. It’s really been great to see how everyone has embraced new technology and apps. Weekends I live in a sporty-luxe world so I’ll pop on some ballet flats or sneakers.
How are you staying motivated from home?
I exercise to stay mentally and physically well. Over the Easter break I spent a little time organising my home gym in the garage and spending time working out. I gave the wind trainer a great nudge! I also love to skip to get my cardio up quickly.
I haven’t had the cooking bug just yet - I’m so envious of all those home chefs posting their latest creations on Instagram and Facebook! I’ve also been supporting my local cafes (I’m a huge coffee lover!) and sharing across my Instagram stories to help promote these businesses that have bit hit that hardest.
What's Caught your Eye From The Current Sambag Collection?
I’m a Leo so I love animal print! I was instantly drawn to the Lola Black & White embossed leather loafers; they are stylish and can be styled with so much of what I already have in my wardrobe. While I so already own a lot of flats, they are mostly in plain colours so these new loafers will be on high rotation! They are so comfortable to wear too, both in the home and out!
How Do You Style The Lola Loafers?
I couldn’t resist styling the Lola loafers with a pleated skirt and tailored jacket, belted. I would also style the loafers with a pair of denims and a classic white shirt, ready to head out for breakfast or a day of shopping - once we can again of course!
Where are you most looking forward to travelling once our lives return to normalcy?
Byron Bay is at the top of my list! I was married in Byron almost 18 years ago now so it's a sentimental holiday destination. I’m a beach-y girl at heart. I pack strictly flats for Byron... Okay... I might sneak one of two pairs of heels, however I generally pack, slides, flats and I love to go bare foot once I hit the beach!
What silver linings are you finding in the current situation?
I’m really appreciating the little things, sitting on my balcony and enjoying a sunset which is even more prettier at this time of year and I’m catching up regularly with my mum who lives in New Jersey via video conferencing. We are having super long chats as I’m not heading out to do shoots in the early mornings. I’m really looking forward to life slowly returning to normal, I do miss events!
What Would You Like To See In The Next Sambag Collection?
I do love Japanese prints, so I could definitely envisage a ballet flat with a gorgeous Japanese crane print in light pastel colours.. that would be cute!
